7 Resume Mistakes Indian Freshers Keep Making

We screen thousands of fresher resumes every season. These seven mistakes appear on most of them, and each takes under an hour to fix.

Every hiring season our team screens thousands of fresher resumes. The same seven mistakes appear again and again — and every one of them is fixable in under an hour.

1. Photo, date of birth, father’s name

Indian freshers inherit resume templates built for government forms. A recruiter does not need your photograph, DOB, marital status or father’s name — and modern HR teams prefer resumes without them.

Fix: Keep contact details to four lines: name, phone, email, city. Add your professional profile link only if it is up to date.

2. Two pages with one year of content

If you graduated in 2026, you do not have two pages of material. Padding with school marks and workshop lists dilutes the parts that matter.

Fix: One page. If your content will not fit, that is an editing signal, not a formatting problem.

3. The vague objective statement

‘Seeking a challenging role in a growth-oriented organisation where I can utilise my skills’ tells the recruiter nothing. Every fresher writes it; nobody reads it.

Fix: Replace it with a two-line summary of what you actually offer: your degree, your strongest skill, and the kind of role you want.

4. Skill dumping

Listing 22 skills — half of them used once in a lab session — invites uncomfortable interview questions. One wrong answer on a ‘skill’ you listed can sink the whole candidature.

Fix: List only skills you can discuss for five minutes. Eight strong skills beat twenty-two weak ones.

5. No numbers anywhere

‘Worked on a college project’ says nothing. ‘Built a hostel-mess feedback app used by 300 students’ says everything.

Fix: Add one number to every project and internship line — users, marks, rank, budget, team size, percentage improvement. Numbers make claims believable.

6. Typos and formatting slips

A resume with ‘Recieved award’ or three different fonts signals carelessness — the one quality no employer forgives in an entry-level hire.

Fix: Run a spell check, then have two people read it. Print it once; errors invisible on screen show up on paper.

7. The same resume everywhere

Sending one generic resume to a bank, a startup and a manufacturing firm means it fits none of them.

Fix: Keep a master resume, then make a copy per application and adjust the summary and top skills to match the job description. Fifteen minutes per application, and it can double your shortlist rate.

The one-hour repair plan

Cut the personal-details block, rewrite the objective into a summary, add numbers to three project lines, prune the skills list, and proofread twice. Do it today — your resume competes with 200 others on every opening, and these seven fixes put you in the top twenty.
